When old Tommy
Made the phony*
"What have he done?"
Theater minstrels
Goin' miser
"What have he done?"

And there went radio
TV's taking the cake
Now here's file sharing
Moguls say they'll be graped**

In the winter, in the summer
Downloading's fun
Record labels claim they're bummered
Why give a damn?

Why buy at iTunes
When you end up getting rare old records
In the meantime
P2P time
Downloading's fun.

Theater minstrels
Goin' miser
"What have he done?"

*instrumental*

I don't use iTunes
Cause I like to get some gigs of free things
In the meantime
P2P time
Downloading's fun.
C'Mon!

*instrumental*

Lobbyists are coming, congressmen are gunning
What have we done?
SOPA's here, dear, public did jeer
That law is damned

When we first read it
We had but one thought
It ain't that good, dear
Piracy won't be stopped

What have I done?
What we have done, done, done?

Them geeks are clever
Can't we people just be like Trent Reznor?***
Thank you, kind sir, like your songs, sir

* - Phony, as in the phonograph, as first developed in 1877 by Thomas Alva Edison. Some feared that the new invention might affect theatre sales, as live singers may be replaced by recorded audio. The same went for television, in which movie firms worried about similar effects in their works

** - Graped, as in to be gang-raped. In this case, record companies argue that they can get figuratively "raped" by file-sharing sites.

*** - Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails was known to be a copyright activist - his band's recent albums were released under a permissible license. He even went so far as to urging fans to pirate the band's discography, and post a torrent link to the first few songs in the album "Ghosts" in The Pirate Bay.
Basically my own take at the SOPA issue. We all know that the proposed, and now shelved, act, can affect the internet in a major way, and even people who use copyrighted content on the web legitimately can be hammered by the feds. And of course, it, like most laws lobbied by the big media cartel, it can and will be abused.

Oh, and in case you've been wondering, the lyrics are from the Renee Olstead cover from the Kit Kittredge soundtrack, which was also included in her Skylark album.
